Chapter Twelve: Not Explaining Myself Anymore

I have been misunderstood for most of my life.

Not in the dramatic way people sometimes mean when they say that. Not misunderstood as in nobody gets my genius or the world isn't ready for me. Misunderstood in the quiet everyday way — the way where people look at you and see something that isn't there or miss entirely what is. You're mean. You never smile. You're too much. You're overbearing. You're intimidating. The labels came from people who could not get what they wanted from me and needed a story to explain why.

I see through all of that now.

Here is what I have learned about the people who call you mean or difficult or hard to approach — most of the time what they are really saying is that they cannot get over on you. They came looking for access, for leverage, for a soft spot they could press when they needed something. And when they found none, they reframed your strength as your flaw. They turned your discernment into a personality problem. They made you the issue, so they didn't have to examine themselves.

The genuine people in my life — the ones who actually know my heart — have never once described me that way. We do not even have those conversations. They know who I am. I know who I am. And that shared understanding requires no defense and no explanation.

I no longer over explain anything.

I said what I said. Full stop. No follow up. No softening. No extended footnote about what I really meant or why I made the choice I made or how I hope you understand where I am coming from. I am a protector of my own spirit now and that means I do not spend my energy managing other people's reactions to my truth. My truth is mine. What you do with it is yours.

This took years to get to. Years of over explaining, over justifying, contorting my words and my decisions into shapes I thought other people could accept more easily. Saying yes when I meant no and then explaining the yes in such elaborate detail that I almost convinced myself it was real. Changing my answers based on who was in the room. Monitoring my tone so carefully that the actual message got buried under the performance of delivering it acceptably.

I was exhausting myself. And for what? To make people comfortable with a version of me that wasn't even real?

Done.

But here is the deeper layer of this chapter — the part I have not always talked about openly because it is personal and it is spiritual and not everyone will understand it. And that is exactly why it belongs here.
